In this section we explain how our online courses work.
Course Features
Human Kinetics Online Education Center courses consist of an online component, which directs you through a series of learning experiences to help you understand and use the course content, and a variety of supplemental student resource materials including printed texts, PDFs, videocassettes, and CD-ROMs (these vary by course, and not all courses include supplemental resource materials).
The online component is not just printed material transferred into digital form. It is designed to give you a meaningful opportunity to interact with the course subject matter in a way that will facilitate your learning. We develop our courses by teaming up the best content experts with our instructional designers to create a powerful learning experience for you.
Types of Courses
Our courses are designed for three purposes:
1. Pre-certification. Some of our courses are excellent preparation for a certification examination with one or more of the professional associations in the physical activity field. We indicate the certifications that a particular course is appropriate for.
2. Post-certification continuing education. After certification, most associations require people to continue their education by participating in a variety of learning activities. Our courses give you the opportunity to gain meaningful continuing education credits. For each continuing education course listed, we identify the agencies that grant credit and the number of credit hours given.
Most of our continuing education courses are problem centered. That is, we identify the principles necessary to solve common problems and guide you through the process of learning how to apply these principles to solve a series of realistic problems that you might encounter. It's a powerful, effective way to learn.
3. College and university credit. We offer courses for academic credit in cooperation with participating colleges and universities. Some of our courses for academic credit are composed of a series of related continuing education courses. Others are specifically designed as more extensive academic courses. We identify the institutions that grant academic credit for any of our courses.
To obtain academic credit for a course, you must register for the course through the Human Kinetics Online Education Center and, if you are not already a student at the institution offering the academic credit, you must also register with this institution. Each academically credited course contains links for online registration with participating universities. You will pay a fee to Human Kinetics Online Education Center to access the course, and you will also need to pay a fee to the institution that grants academic credit.
Course Process
Human Kinetics Online Education Center online courses are designed to be used in one of two ways:
1. Each course may be taken as a self-contained learning experience. You receive (for most courses) student resource materials through the mail, complete the online student study guide, and take an online test, all without the interaction of an instructor.
2. Each course may be taken as part of a larger course offered by an agency that provides additional instruction in one of several forms. Agencies may supplement the online course with direct classroom, seminar, or workshop instruction; they may provide synchronous video or online instruction; or they may use asynchronous e-mail exchanges with the instructor. All relevant course listings explain the offline instruction requirements for each participating university.
Course Registration
When you're ready to register for a course, select the View Courses button here or on the navigation bar on the left. Find the course you wish to register for and click the title. After reviewing the information, you may proceed through the online purchasing process. Here's what to expect once you've registered:
1. We'll promptly send you the student resource materials. Most courses come with support materials in the form of a printed text, and some also include a videocassette or a CD-ROM. If you already have the text for the course, you may opt to purchase the course without text.
2. After registering for the course, you may access the course immediately. Click the My Courses button on the left hand navigation bar in order to begin the online course. Sign on with the email address and password that you registered with and follow the online instructions for taking the course.
3. You will receive your KEY CODE in 2 business days after you have placed your order. This key code will give you access to the course exam. To use the key code, go to the HK Online Education Center (at http://www.hkeducationcenter.com/) and click on the My Courses button. You'll be asked to sign on with your email address and password.
4. Click the "Enter Key Code" button on the My Courses screen. This will take you to a new page where you must enter your key code exactly as it is printed on the letter you receive with your materials (including hyphens). If you have trouble entering the key code or receive an error, contact keycodesupport@hkusa.com.
5. After entering your key code, you will also be asked to choose your organization for credits. Use the dropdown list to choose your organization.
6. The "My Courses" page will now be updated so that you may enter the exam at any time.
7. If you fail an exam, you will be given a link to purchase a retake when you click the "Exam Info" link on the "My Courses" page. Once the retake has been processed, you will receive a new key code via email. Please allow 2 business days to process your order.
8. Once you have passed an exam, you may click the "Exam Info" link on the My Courses page in order to either view the results from the exam, email a copy of the results to yourself, and/or to print out a certificate for your organization.
Key Codes
Key codes will be emailed to you 2 business days after your order has been placed. If you have a question regarding the use of Key Codes, please contact Human Kinetics
