Each stage of a graded exercise test lasts 3 minutes (unless otherwise stated in the test instructions). Heart rate is recorded during each minute, but only the heart rate from the last 2 minutes of a stage is used to calculate the average heart rate for that stage. The heart rates for the last 2 minutes of each stage must be within five beats of each other (indicating steady state), or the client must continue for additional minutes until 2 consecutive minutes meet this criterion. Let's say that the following data are collected in a test conducted on a 43-year-old woman:

STAGE

MINUTE

HEART RATE

2

1

112

2

116

3

118

In this case, the last 2 minutes of the stage elicited heart rates that were within two beats of each other, therefore meeting the five-beat criterion. This client is ready to move up to the next workload.
