Now I would like four of you to present a situation that you think best describes developmentally appropriate physical education.

Kim

I've seen third-grade teams playing 5-on-5 basketball. Wouldn't that be developmentally appropriate?

Kathy

My ninth-grade students sometimes have the choice of several skills with variations in complexity, such as 1-on-1 or 3-on-3.

Now you need to choose which situation you think best describes developmentally appropriate physical education.

When we start our basketball unit, I'll have sixth-grade students dribbling a basketball for 15 minutes around lines of cones. They can all use more practice dribbling.

Brad

The kindergarten students like dribbling a regulation-size basketball around lines of cones. We usually do this activity for about 15 minutes.

This 5-on-5 setup wouldn't be the best choice, since small-sided games (such as 2-on-2) provide more practice opportunities.

This dribbling drill isn't the best practice, because the length of the activity and its level of difficulty would be inappropriate. The task could lead to boredom.
